Daily Log: Day Five

May 21, 2016 (Saturday) 10:15am - 11:15am
Hours completed: 1
Accumulated onsite hours: 29

This brief time was spent observing a "volunteen" orientation. The library volunteens are teenagers who volunteer at the library during the summer. The meeting was pretty informal with some fun ice breakers and opportunities for the teens to ask questions throughout. Bryan did a good job of engaging the teenagers despite the fact that there were some pretty rambunctious girls in the front row.

Daily Log: Day Four

May 20, 2016 (Friday) 2:00pm - 6:00pm
Hours completed: 4
Accumulated onsite hours: 28

Friday afternoon was interesting. I spent a little bit of time working on the handouts for the Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds program, while watching Victoria perform a storytime for a group of second graders who came into the library. Getting to see lots of different types of programs and interactions with school groups has been a great part of this first week.

After getting a little bit of work done, we spent the rest of the afternoon removing stickers and covers of books that had been weeded from the collection. These books are going to be donated to a community program next weekend, and they needed a little bit of love and repair before finding new homes. We made quite a big mess with all of the paper and covers but by the end of the afternoon the books looked much better and are ready for their trip in the book bike.

We were supposed to go to Bexley's Main Event after the library closed, but it unfortunately it got rained out. I'm looking forward to the next one in June!

Daily Log: Day Three

May 19, 2016 (Thursday) 9:00am - 4:00pm
Hours completed: 7
Accumulated onsite hours: 24

Today started off with an awesome trip to a local preschool. The school was a short walk from the library and the sun was finally shining. Victoria held storytime for two different classes and while I was not directly assisting her, I was a very active participant. Shadowing her storytimes was not only fun, but helpful to see how she handled certain situations and to get ideas about best practices for my own future storytimes. One specific note that I want to remember is that for one of the books, she printed out the words on one of the pages and taped the sheet to the back of the book. This way, she was about to read the words quickly and expressively without worrying about angling the book the right way or missing some of the words because of a strange font. This is an awesome idea and I plan to borrow it in the future. I'm looking forward to attending more events with the different library staff to see how they do their storytimes and to be able to get even more amazing ideas.

The rest of the day was spent making lesson plans for the Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds program. The budget is mostly set, the schedule is written, and the first three handouts are finished. We discussed including evaluations that would come from the children as well. The plan is to be able to provide opportunities for the children to evaluate each specific program as well as the entire summer's worth.

Daily Log: Day Two

May 18, 2016 (Wednesday) 9:00am - 6:00pm
Hours completed: 9
Accumulated onsite hours: 17

Day two involved more outreach meeting to local schools, this week is the big ramp up before summer reading so the librarians are making sure to get out to as many classrooms as they can to promote reading during summer vacation.

My onsite supervisor and I sat down and planned in better detail the four main areas that I will be working on this summer. For programming, I will be taking the lead on the Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds program. To work on collection development, I will be doing some weeding of the picture book collection. For reader's advisory, I will be creating new booklists to supplement the lists that the library already has for both YA and for picture books. And lastly, outreach is an ongoing part of my experience with the library, starting with the outreach events that I've attending and will continue with the different events that the library hosts throughout the summer.

In addition to this one-on-one meeting, I also had the opportunity to sit in on the youth services planning meeting for summer reading. The meeting was for the youth services department to touch base before summer reading kicks off and for them to all be on the same page about various issues. The meeting also provided an opportunity for a member of the IT staff to show the YS staff how checking out books will work when staff are out and about town with the new book bike.

Aside from the different meetings and programs I attended today, I also spent time creating lesson plans and scheduling for the Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds program. The program is coming along nicely and should be almost completely finished by the end of the week.

Daily Log: Day One

May 17, 2016 (Thursday) 9:00am - 5:00pm
Hours completed: 8
Accumulated onsite hours: 8

My first day onsite was a bit of a blur. Much of the day was spent meeting different library staff members and getting acquainted with my tasks for the summer. The day began with an outreach meeting to a local elementary school to promote summer reading. I attending several different outreach programs on this day, for multiple grade levels at multiple different schools. Each program lasted around 20 to 30 minutes and covered how summer reading worked and provided time to answer the student's questions.

In addition to attending these outreach events, I also attending a summer reading meeting that covered the last bits and pieces that needed to come together for the library's summer reading program that is starting next week. There is a lot of excitement about the book bike that will (hopefully) be at the library starting next week. There are a lot of moving parts for summer reading, and all parts of the library are involved to pull off an amazing program for the entire community.

We also began to set out the different projects that I will be working on this summer to meet my different CE objectives. The piece that I began the most work on today was the Healthy Minds Healthy Bodies program that will be on Monday afternoons for students who are in 4th grade and older. The program will promote fitness, healthy eating, and fun challenges for the brain.
