I came in on a Saturday to observe the "storytime stroll". It was incredibly cute and a great idea. I love the idea of doing a storytime on a walk, and it was a fun way to promote a local business. (The stroll ended at Johnson's, a local ice cream shop. We definitely took the opportunity to give them our patronage before returning to the library.) I also got to get a little bit more weeding done, I'm through the Hs! I'm hopeful I'll get a little bit more done on Monday but if I'm on desk all day it's doubtful.

I've gotten to be on desk a whole bunch this week. I wish it had been split up a little bit, spreading out my desk time from the beginning of my practicum, however I understand why things have progressed the way that they have. Friday's are usually pretty relaxed and fun. Art a la Cart is from 2:00 to 3:00 and then lego club is for an hour directly afterwards. We usually have been letting the lego club kids stay for a bit longer after 4:00 if they're not causing too much of a ruckus. Both programs are a lot of fun and I really see the benefit of having them at the library.

I ended up being on desk almost all day today! It hasn't been too terribly busy, but I've fielded some questions, tidied up the picture book section and the YA area. And in the maybe 45 minutes I was off desk I got some more weeding done. I'm though the Hs I believe in the picture books, which has been about two full book carts of picture books.

I spent quite a bit of time on desk today. Helped some patrons, actually helped someone find books for their child who was someone I used to work with which was a fun coincidence. Kindergarten Allstars was today as well. Victoria was out so I helped Marilyn with the program which was a lot of fun. The kids had a lot of energy but I think by the end they generally got the concept of what alliteration is. I got a chance to do some weeding as well, I was hoping to get through all of the pictures books before I leave but I keep ending up on desk. Hopefully I'll have some off desk time tomorrow to get through a bunch of the picture books but we shall see!

I was on desk all morning today. I helped a number of families track down some summer reading books, helped a boy with a summer homework assignment on Native Americans, completed a YA booklist for the teen librarian, and directed traffic. The YS department has been relatively quiet this morning despite the two storytimes that happened today. Everything has been more or less under control with only a few temper tantrums.

Monday continues to be my favorite day in the office, despite the stereotypical opinion of Mondays. Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds is so much fun to be the lead on. We only had two friends come in today, which was a bummer, but we still had fun and it gave me the opportunity to learn what a program is like when very few people show up. I finished up another readers' advisory booklist, this time for wordless books. I'm hoping to be able to finish a few more booklists before finishing up my time here, but man time is flying! I can't believe that I'm only here for one more week.

Today was a blur! Almost all of my day was spent on desk, both in YS downstairs and upstairs at the info desk. Laura gave me tons of great advice about providing reference and about her experiences working in adult services. I've really enjoyed my on desk time, it's almost always been with another library staff member which has given me the opportunity to learn from more seasoned library staff. It's also been a very "sink or swim" sort of experience which has allowed me to learn quickly and utilize my problem solving skills.

I feel as though I've been absorbed into the library. I'm going to miss this place terribly in two weeks when I have to leave. My on desk time has been great, and I had the opportunity today to go on desk upstairs in adult services. I was a little nervous to be with the adults for the first time, but the AS librarian who was with me was lovely and gave me plenty of great advice. I fielded my first adult reference question, which was naturally about growing "plants" in someone's home. I'm glad my first official adult reference question was about such an interesting topic and gave me a great story to tell.
In addition to fielding indoor farming questions, I got some weeding done, went to a preschool storytime with Victoria, and got in a skype conversation with Dr. Boon. It was a very full and engaging day.

I got to get some work done on programs and reader's advisory booklists, but mostly ended up helping patrons and running around all day. It was nice to really feel useful and to get to spend more time on desk.

Monday's are actually my favorite day at BPL. Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds has been really fun and I've enjoyed putting the program together. We didn't have a ton of of children, but apparently only 6 children at a program isn't too bad. The kids had a lot fun kickboxing, the granola bars turned out delicious, and the toothpaste was disastrous. But, there's something to be said for teaching kids the art of failing with style.
I ran to the store to pick up a few last minute materials for the program, spent some time weeding pictures books, and got to staff the YS desk for a while. Getting to be on desk has been really interesting, and I feel like I've learned a lot in such a short period of time. Having the opportunity to provide reader's advisory to the kids who come into the department has been a blast - definitely one of my favorite parts of this CE.

Today was really fun! I went into the library to help out with a "Bring the Farm to You" event. A local organization brought soil and seeds and helped anyone who wanted to plant them. Mostly families attended the event, but there were a few adults who stopped by to plant some seeds and enjoy the beautiful weather. I also did some at home prep for HBHM tomorrow. The granola bar recipe were doing involves some waiting. Instead of asking the kids to come back in 2 hours, I pre-made a batch of granola bars at home. That way, we can made the bars together, but instead of waiting for them to be finished, a batch will already be ready to taste!

Friday's are particularly fun in the summer at the library. There are all sorts of fun programs going on in the YS area. "Art a la cart" involves a group art project that gets displayed in the auditorium for the rest of the summer, and lego club is right afterwards and is a giant lego free build in the department. Both are really fun for the kids and get a pretty good turnout. I also got to start weeding today! I'm starting with a big long list of "dead" picture books that need to be pulled. Victoria has the final say on whether or not the book goes, but it's pretty easy to see why these books are the ones that are being pulled from the collection.

Prepped materials for the Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds program. This program is turning out to involve quite a bit more prep time than I had originally thought. Victoria and I went to the store to pick up more of the materials we need for the program. I covered the desk for several hours today, for most of the day there was often only one person on desk in the youth services department. I finished up a few more booklists and popped into a few different programs going on during the day. There was a particularly adorable morning program for parents and caregivers to do yoga with their toddlers, it was very cute.

Today involved a lot of filling in where an extra set of hands was needed. I now have access to Polaris, and spent quite a bit of the afternoon staffing the desk in the youth services department. I spend some time working on reader's advisory book lists for the teen librarian and also ones for middle grade readers. The Kindergarten All-stars program was today, which I assisted with prep, set up, tear down and assistance during the program. There was a lot happening in the department and it was a "one thing after the other" kind of day.

Short morning shifts fly by so quickly. I spent part of this morning working on getting together a nice schedule for the healthy bodies healthy minds program. One of the lovely gentlemen up in PR created an awesome one that I later found already hanging up in the department. I helped out with the summer reading table, watched the YS department while staff members needed to leave, and prepped for various programs.

First day of the Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds program! We had a lot of prep to do, with set up and making sure all of the snack food was prepped. Luckily one of the volunteens was available to assist me with the program. Today we did yoga, made salsa, and made newspaper tower structures. There were about 8 kids who attended the program, mostly girls and mostly in the 5th grade. The evaluations that they filled out at the end of the program were really positive and it sounds like the kids will be planning on coming back next week! I got to run my first solo program at a library today, so that was pretty exciting. I was a little nervous, but it went well and I think I have a good idea on how to improve in the future. This particular program is pretty messy, clean up took almost an hour! So for next week, I want to make sure that everything is prepped and ready well before the time that the program is supposed to begin.

I finished the Rainbow Reads booklist for Bryan, the teen library and sent it along to him for printing. We tweaked some of the handouts for the HBHM program to make sure they all looked perfect for the first week. I assisted with the Ready for Kindergarten program by helping with set up, clean up, and making all of the name tags for the kids. Before the second stuffie sleepover, I helped sign up some of the stuffed animals who would be staying the night at the library.

Today was a very long day. There were lots of programs going on and the day felt like one thing after another. I created evaluations for the program that I have been working on so that we can get feedback from the children about what they think about it. I helped staff the summer reading table again, signing patrons up, explaining the program to them, and helping other patrons when the library staff were busy. I started working on the reader's advisory portion of my practicum experience. The teen library had me start with a LGBT reader's advisory sheet for the teens. The previous book list was very out of date and so I started working on a list with newer books that covered a diverse range of topics.
Every summer, BPL hosts a "stuffie sleepover" where stuffed animals are brought to the library for a story time and get to spend the night at the library. At some point, there had been a typo and some of the promotional materials for this program said the sleepover was on Wednesday and some of them said that it was on Thursday. So, the YS staff just decided to do it twice. I stuck around on Wednesday to help out because the department was a little understaffed. It was a lot of fun and is a really cute program.
